A close-up, low-angle shot captures an old, weathered outdoor spigot with a green handle, leaking water in distinct drops. The spigot is mounted on a light-colored wall, and the surrounding area shows signs of wear and tear, including chipped paint and ru

It’s not often our pipes in San Antonio freezes, but when the storm of 2021 blew through, it certainly opened our eyes to preventative measures. The average amount of time it takes for pipes to freeze and burst without a heating source is about four to five hours in temperatures of 20 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Unfortunately, those temps stuck around for a few days and our great city fell to its knees, along with all Plumbing companies.

Our team worked quick and fast to reach as many neighbors as possible, at minimum, to isolate the damage. Materials were scarce and travel from home to home was difficult. We were glad we could help so many San Antonians and will do it again in a heartbeat.

How long does it take to repair a burst pipe?

To repair a burst pipe will depend on the extent of the damage. It can take several hours to several days depending on many different factors including the size, the location, the amount of damage, material, and age of the pipe(s).

What happens when a pipe bursts in your house?

When a pipe bursts in your house, it’s likely to cause damage to your walls, floors, ceilings, belongings, and possibly severe flooding could occur. Pipe bursts happen for a variety of reasons including freezing cold temperatures, damage to the pipes, rodents, or excessive water pressure. It is recommended to isolate the leak as quickly as possible by shutting off the water to your home. You can do this by locating a main shut off valve at the water softener (if you have one in the garage) or a shut off valve at the meter. A shut off valve usually does not require a tool. Isolating the leak will prevent more damage to the exposed area. Any repairs needed should be done by a licensed plumber who is insured and can guarantee/warranty their workmanship and materials.

Preventative measures

Take a moment and perform a visual inspection to keep your family and home safe.  What you want to look for are any signs of moisture damage, or water stains below or around piping.

Interior

  • Attic: If your attic is like mine, there are areas that are easily accessible and piping that may be out of reach.
  • Cabinets: Check your piping under the kitchen or lavatory sink.
  • Laundry Room: Washer box valves and hoses.

Exterior

  • Hose bibs: Leaking hose bibs is a sign that they need to be replaced. Piping that is exposed to the elements should be insulated.
  • Water Heater: Supply Lines, expansion tank, water line connections & water in the pan.
  • Water Softener: Supply Lines and connections

A leak detection system is another alternative for a preventative measure. They are usually installed at the base of a water heater, water softener, HVAC plans, or at the meter. If you don’t feel comfortable performing these preventative steps, call the experts and we will ensure your home is protected. Service Now & Pay Later With Our Financing Plans.
